Nursing Education
To train the nurses of tomorrow, institutions need to rely on innovative tools and techniques that will truly prepare students for their nursing practice. Our recent ReAction Virtual event featured an enlightening session titled “Selfies & Skills Assessments: Using Video to Assess Nursing Competencies” aimed at addressing this important topic. Presented by Dr. Stacie Hunsaker of Brigham Young University College of Nursing, this session demonstrated how the combination of video + feedback GoReact is transforming the way nursing students are developing skills needed for practice.
“We as a team here at Brigham Young University College of Nursing have really been engaged in being innovative and in trying to find new processes and techniques that will help our center become better. GoReact has been an incredible tool for helping us improve how we prepare nursing students for their futures,” shared Dr. Hunsaker.
Let’s dive into the key takeaways from this popular session and discover how GoReact is helping develop more skilled students, while also saving instructors time and resources.
One of the fundamental challenges in nursing education is providing students with ample opportunities to practice and perfect their skills. Dr. Hunsaker emphasized how video assessment and feedback tools like GoReact, make it easier for students to demonstrate skills in the simulation lab, and then for instructors to provide time-coded feedback to students. By utilizing GoReact’s platform, nursing students have access to a wealth of practice sessions.
Morgan Butler, a BYU nursing student from California, shared her experience stating, “GoReact gave me the confidence that I needed to do this IV pass off knowing that I’d been able to practice a bunch, and I had been able to do different retakes with my partner to perfect that.”
The flexibility and accessibility offered by GoReact empower students to practice and refine their skills at their own pace, ultimately boosting their confidence when it comes to real-life patient care scenarios.
Another way nursing students develop confidence in their skills is through meaningful feedback, and GoReact provides a robust platform for educators to offer precise, real-time feedback. Allie Cook, a nursing student from Colorado, shared her perspective, highlighting the benefits of feedback powered by GoReact.
“With these online GoReact pass offs, BYU gives us a period of time that we can use to record this pass off. I find it so much more helpful, and we do get more practice and we do get more feedback from our partner as if it were a practice but also a pass off. So it’s way less stressful, and you get the techniques down that you need to,” Cook said.
This feedback loop is instrumental in helping students understand their strengths and areas that need improvement. It fosters a culture of continuous learning and improvement, a cornerstone of effective nursing education.
In the nursing profession, effective communication with patients is paramount. GoReact isn’t just about honing clinical skills; it also helps students develop their patient communication abilities. In GoReact, students can record themselves delivering patient feedback in a practice setting. Then they can self-reflect, and review their communication skills with their peers and instructor to identify areas where they excel and where they need to improve.
Through this process, students can build the vital skill of empathy, ensuring they are not just technically proficient but also compassionate and attentive to the patient.
